i have been listening to mindcrime by queensryche alot this past week and in one of my favorite songs: "i don't believe in love" the lyrics contain the phrase "raison d’etre" and i don't know what it means so can any of you french speaking people clue me in please? i bet it is a really common phrase that i just never picked up on.

It means "reason of being" and is an idiom that has become part of the English language too.

Basically you use it to indicate your purpose, your life's meaning.

Addendum: Woohoo for Mindcrime! My roommate plays that song often on the guitar in between working on sightreading in the omnibook. Hah I just like the absurdity of playing DeGarmo lines and reading Coltrane at the same time.
