FS/FT: Peavey Triple X

EL34's come stock with a 6L6 to EL34 switch, so I'd be interested to know what "mod" that tech did, lol (and how much your friend was charged for this mod).

Good luck with the sale. Price is a bit steep it seems, though.

It actually is beneficial to slightly mod the XXX to better accept EL34s, and if you want it to even survive EL-34Ls, you need for sure need to mod.

They used whimpy screen resistors(was updated in the past few years). Some EL-34's would cause issues.

The mod is quite common, that's probably what was done.

IIRC, it was only e34l's that caused the problem, and it was only relegated to early XXX's. Peavey updated the SGR's from 100ohm to 700ohm specifically because of the e34l issue a few years after the introduction of the amp. Apparently you can tell which versions may have the updated SGR's from the logo style on the faceplate (lightning logo or the newer style logo).

Regardless, I'd still be skeptical of the mod's need and/or if the tech charged for work he may not have done, but that's me.

Yeah I know about the updated years, although I thought it was only the last few years they did it. Just trying to make the OP feel better about it I guess :)

I did hear of people having issues with other brands of standard EL-34's, since some are out of spec, and that resistor value was riding the edge very close. So an out of tolerance tube could in fact cause issues.

I remember when it all started, the euro tubes guy told everyone it was fine to use the JJ EL-34Ls, and as soon as that happened Peavey got a ton of XXX's in for repair... I remember how pissed people were at that guy on the Peavey forums... Think they ran him off.

Sorry to get off topic!
