The band played a doomfest with Avernus, Evoken, Thorns of The Carrion and others near Cleveland a few years back. In between songs, an exasperated Paul shouted "You can find our merchandise and our cds... behind the fucking pirate ship!" The club inexplicably had a full-scale pirate ship hanging from the ceiling.o_O Weird place. I drove out from Massachusetts for the show, and that remark alone made me forget about the 11 hour drive. :tickled:

I don't know why I'm writing this- it doesn't seem funny on the screen, but it was fucking hilarious at the time.

I have this on video actually. I can try to find it and post it.

The one for me, was Detroit. Our set was horrible, and when we finished, our drummer at the time, Abbas, who is a Pakastani guy, walked to the front mic, and started to yell in a think Indian accent "Shut de Fuck up! We've got CD's and T-Shirts for sale. You shut de fuck up and go buy dem, or I'll bomb dis fucking place." They shut down the mic, and killed the power to the stage to get him off. It was one moment I laughed at and still do to this day.

I'm assuming the drummer's venting was pre-9/11. Had it been after that, it's possible he would have been detained or something. Whether or not that would have made it funnier is debatable.

Very much pre 9/11. He's actually inquired about the video since 9/11, and I keep telling him i'm sending it to the feds.

Oh man, Abbas is awesome! Man i havent heard from that guy in years! Ember ruled!

That is also hilarious about the pirateship.. I'd love to see that! hahaha.

Ember did rule- that Gate demo tape was awesome stuff. i always liked Abbas' drumming because he didn't just play through everything, he wrote decent parts that were really catchy and added to the music. a lot of those catchy drum parts on Sculptured Ivy were his ideas.

LOL, oh man that's funny. Nothing beats a lifetime of free favors via blackmail  . Seriously though, if the many drum parts from Sculptured Ivy were really Abbas's handiwork, that seriously makes me regret not being more familiar with his stuff.

I think i'm going to have to pull out Sculptured IVy tonight, when I get home from work.. that's still my favorite ND ever.

This new one is serisouly kicking my ass though!

In my estimation, Abbas did lay the foundation for the structuring of the parts for those songs on Of Sculptured Ivy..., but credit should not be taken away from Sasha who actually played and recorded those parts and added plenty of his own flair and ideas to them. I may not have been in the band yet when that album was recorded but I've heard those songs performed by both Abbas and Sasha. Sasha's performance on that album was very exceptional and should get it's just due.

Definitely.. speaking of Sasha, has that guy been doing anything musically in the past years?

Yes, Sasha has been playing with Chicago band Meqqa. They stopped playing for a bit, but have recently started again. If I had to compare them, I would say they are in the Tool and Chevelle catagory. Very cool band. They used to have a website, but he told me it was down. We just had the pleasure to see him again at the CD release party.

yeah, not taking anything away from sasha- he was simply amazing. man, he played the drums HARD too. even when he messed up, it was in time and sounded cool.

i just always liked the catchy parts abbas came up with for that album's material. that second 3-song demo Ember did (the Gate i think?) was what made me want to ask him to play drums.

my favorite ember is the last demo... the song Concession that leads right into th song the Shedding.. oh man that drives me nuts everything I hear it and just watnt to thrash around and smash stuff. HAHA..

a sort of related question...
What are the bands opinions on the distribution of bootlegs (both audo and video)? Does it make a difference to you if they are traded/given or if they are sold?

Well, obviously first and foremost, if its a bootleg of a licensed product (one of our official albums, for instance) then we're strongly against that. As for live stuff, we prefer that people trade them as opposed to sell them of course. We've seen our stuff on both traders and sellers lists in the past, and usually we'll contact them and at least ask for a copy of it. Would you believe, we've found out about dealers having bootlegs of our shows, that we didn't have prior knowledge of, and they actually wanted to CHARGE us for a copy?? Some people have alot of nerve. They lose their nerve when they find out we have a very good lawyer who works for us though >=)

I personally don't mind the whole live video/audio thing, because I have been a big collector of that stuff for years myself, for my favorite artists. But the problem comes down to "quality control"....meaning, do I want any of you guys as loyal fans to go and shell out $20 for a bootleg of ND playing the Detroit Metalfest in 1998? Hell no, LOL, mainly because it was a dreadful show with awful sound, lots of technical difficulties, and just not worth the money. (Funny enough, I wasn't in the band for that show, but I've seen it, and its dreadful haha.....the other guys will agree with me on this though!) If anyone out there finds some ND stuff on the market that you're interested in buying or trading for, just don't hesitate to come to us and ask about it first. Not to get our "permission", but just so we can fill you in on whether its a good show or bad show or whatever.....plus, keep in mind, we are definitely going to be doing a DVD somewhere in the relatively near future, and we'll be cramming it full of cool old footage and stuff that I guarantee is better and more worth having than anything the bootleggers have out there.

thats cool man. Yeah of course i dont approve of bootlegs of official stuff. I agree that people who sell bootlegs are pretty fucking jerky. Thats quite the nerve, but hopefully you legally kicked their ass.

As for the DVD, that sounds freakin fantastic! I collect live dvds, and a novembers doom dvd would be a nice addition

And what's Abbas up to these days?
