Gemini Five Black Anthem
Wild Kingdom KING019CDPROMO - September 2 , 2005
By Zack Attaran
Gemini Five seems to be having a lot of fun playing their music. Maybe thats a good thing, but when their dignity is the price they have to pay for that, then they should take a good look at their career and ask, Do we really want our names to be Snoopy, Slim Peete, Hot Rod and Tin Star? I know Id be pretty pissed if I got the short straw and ended up with Slim Peete. Born and raised in Sweden and coming together in Stockholm, they certainly are having no trouble staying successful, as this is their second release since 2003s Babylon Rockets. Their biggest hit to date, however, is their cover of Dead or Alives You spin me round (like a record)'. Go figure.
On the topic of their less than entertaining Arena Rock style, they only have one or two songs worth mentioning, as all of their others have endless choruses, repetitive melodies, identical drum lines, and some serious riff hacking. Songs like Silent Night and the single Black Anthem are mildly entertaining as they base their rhythm on acoustic guitars rather than the generic hammering of the same chords on the electric. Their sound falls in the same boat as Ratt and Velvet Revolver. As a matter of fact, I think they accidentally let a couple of their favorite riffs slip in there. No matter, it makes their half-assed song writing much more enjoyable. On the positive side, its catchy as hell and I am singing it without even realizing it, albeit my dislike for it.
Overall, it seems as if Gemini Five have taken the "attitude in your face" road, coining themselves as ultra-heavy-cool-rock and roll. The bottom line is, these guys are just generic arena rock, and will only keep you entertained if you have a couple of beers under your belt and you dont fancy anything deep.
