Hey anyone know a good cable product that I can use to just line in from my amp to my PC? (I have a Dell)

use a regular guitar cable ( a good one ) and put a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter on one end of it. stick that end into your computer's line-in. the other end goes into your amp's output jack. there should be a "line-out" or "headphone out" on the amp. if your amp is a stack or tube powered, be careful about what's connected where. you don't want to run a tube-head without a load, so don't pull the speaker cabinet out to connect your line-out. use another jack.

IMPORTANT: make sure if the line-in connection is suspended in mid-air to prop it up with something. you don't want to break that input off or you're screwed. treat it with care.

Do you know where I could buy one of those adapters? And exactly what kind of adapter is it?

it just changes the size of the end of your cable. most audio/video stores should have it. Radio Shack, Best Buy, Circuit City... anything like that.
looks like this:

as for directly connecting, i haven't tried that. i was referring to going amp > line in.

Lined-in without a preamp isn't going to sound much better, sorry to say. If you want to line in and achieve moderately decent tones, invest in a cheap dedicated guitar preamp. A guitar simply isn't made to go straight into the back of a PC, you need something to bring that signal up to line level and shape it. Going through a line-out on an amp may give you the needed volume, but quite frankly it'll sound like ass.

depends on the amp you're using as well as the soundcard and software in question. i've gotten sick tones with this method.

Yeah I'm worried about that too...

Moonlapse, do you have any suggestions on affordable preamps that are good quality?

No I can't say I have any good suggestions on cheap guitar preamps. You've got to remember that in the audio industry you get what you pay for almost every time. There is a reason that Behringer gear is so cheap and Neve/Mackie gear so expensive.

If you're after a cheap preamp, expect to get a shit sounding one regardless of what manufacturer made it. This isn't a definitive rule or anything, but it's true easily in 99% of cases.

I concur, of course it doesn't sound crystal clear but it is usable. When it comes to recording vocals and acoustic guitars i have to use my incredibly cheap computer microphone, that is not good at all, i get a lot of fuzz and shit.

Get a DI-box.
Behringer ULTRA DI-100.
It's cheap and good.

What is the reason?

good lord i was searching for one of those a few months ago and never found it.

Yeah it's just a cheap cable, not like a real guitar cable. I found it with all the accessory cables area in the store, if that helps.

If you're gonna go the preamp route you may as well get a modeller because the cabinet sims sound a lot better than just having the pre-amp lined in. Exception here is bass.

Also it's smart to get a soundcard with 1/4 ins instead of using the converter unless you aren't overly concerned with quality. Then again if you get the pod you can use the usb connection and not worry about it at all.

ok...I found the adapter and I hooked everything up...now how would I go about changing Adobe Audition from using my computer mic as the recording source to using the line in on my computer as a recording source????
