General question about a guitar cable

Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio

Under 'Sound Recording' select the right device then hit the Volume button. There'll be a 'select' checkbox under each input. Select the line-in.

@MightA: Because Behringer in a word, is shit. It's the butt of every joke in the music industry, nobody takes them seriously, their gear depreciates in value like all shit, their gear is unreliable, their gear just does its job badly etc.

Bad answer.

Why is it a bad idea to go straight from the head to the computer? Is it okay if I go straight from the head into my four-track? That's actually the only line-out that I have on my halfstack.

Also, wouldn't recording directly from the amp's line-out be the same as using a pre-amp?

I've been recording like this: guitar > pedal > four-track. Next time, I was planning to go guitar > pedal > amp > four-track to get a better sound, but now I don't know if that's a good idea anymore.

ok...I did that...but I'm still not getting any recording response from any programs. 'Scuse my retardation, but is the line in the pink, green, or blue input?

You definately won't get any audible response if you're going straight from guitar into the PC. The humbuckers' output signal isn't very strong, hence why they need an amplifier to project the sound in the first place. You need to pump the volume on the PC like all hell to hear anything.

Well I bought an adapter and got mined lined in to the back of my PC and it sounds pretty good...better than my mic sounded.

this is actually untrue at least in my experiences. once i tried testing my input line by jacking my guitar cable straight into the soundcard and i got a very nice response. the problem was it lacked good tone and the other stuff that amps/fx do.

and about the 1/8" jack: how is it lower quality? i was under the impression that the shape of the input is irrelevant, only the materials and quality of the connections and cables. its all going to be in mono anyway.

@ magic_elf : www.soundclick.com, register as a band

@ Silent Song : I have never been able to get a decent sound plugging my guitar/amp line out directly in my PC. My mic'ed recordings sounds 1000X better. I've got samples of both if you want to hear the difference. As for the 1/8 jacks, I have also heard that it reduces the sound quality, as most jacks do, but I don't know exactly why.

@ Moonlapse : do you ever post without saying "hence"?

i won't dispute that mic recordings sound a lot better, i was just saying that it's possible to record straight in. its better to have a preamp (fxbox or amp) in there somewhere, but mic'd sounds best imo. still i don't understand how a 1/4 jack is any better than a 1/8... they do the same thing with different sizes.
