No way man that whole series was boss. Freddie Highmore is creepy as fuck, especially when he goes into that dead stare right before a violent fugue. And the girl with CF is good, too.
Vera makes the show. Yeah, Emma is actually a good character too, but I wouldn't have made it past the third episode if not for Vera. The show has way too many cheesy "Look at me, I wish I were Twin Peaks" moments. The biggest issue I have with it is the Bradley character. I don't think they could have found a more stilted actress. And if her robot-like acting ability wasn't bad enough,
****SPOILER****the entire relationship she had with Norman felt completely unnatural. To the point where it seemed like he could have imagined all of it, but we know he didn't.
Hmm, sounds interesting. Does it rely heavily on jump scares though? Because I'm not a big fan of those, personally...
Personally, joybuzzer startle moments are one of the few ways that actually ever put the "scare" or "horror" in horror movies for me. Alien, Aliens and Halloween did it best. But that probably has more to do with their phenomenal atmospheres. Most of these other so called horror movies are just splatterfests, and that's not scary. The Conjuring does have a lot of jump out moments, but it does a pretty good job with the build up. It's not just a random scene and then "SURPRISE!!!".
The movie made me think of The Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, The Exorcist and a little bit of Insidious (until the retarded ending at least; and not because of the actor involved).
And since this thread is about "good old fashioned" horror, you might want to check these gems out if you've missed them. Trick r Treat especially.
