Grand Magus

@npearce - the article in Terrorizer on Grand Magus has me really intrigued, particularly their latest album. However, I've heard a couple of songs from their debut and they were just too 'bluesy' for my liking. As discussed (and described) in the interview, is their latest album as different as it sounds then? You once described it as Viking Doom if I remember correctly...

The new album does have a somewhat bluesy feel to it, but overall they are groovy doom/stoner rock.

Two bands I've been listening to lately that are similar but slightly heavier are:

Place of Skulls

The Hidden Hand

I believe Terrorizer also has an article on Place of Skulls. Dreamlord should also check both these bands out at once.

Aha, so was I wrong in thinking you'd described it as Viking Doom then?

I read the article on Place of Skulls too. Again, sounded very promising. Brief description?

I did describe Grand Magus as Viking Doom, but only because they have the imagery and lyrics of the vikings. Their music is more of a combination of doom, stoner, and blues. Some of their solos are blues based and some are pretty straight up metal. Overall they are a band that are very fun to listen to. I would definitely call them metal, though. They only contain that "fun" bluesy feel in certain places.

Place of Skulls has massive Sabbath style grooves with nicely sung clean vocals. I would actually say they are a great place for power metal fans to start if they want to listen to ballsy doom (I'm not calling you a power metal fan). Their riffs are very metal, but the vocals are kind of seventies sounding. Rough . . . but still clean. Excellent songwriting as well. They are very careful not to become a cliche.

Have you heard of Doomsword, npearce? They're a bit like Ancient Rites meets Candlemass, with complete Viking lyrics and imagery in their art. Sounds like your description of Place of Skulls.

Their second album got an excellent write-up in Terrorizer (a couple of months back), but I've only heard the debut. I actually traded a spare copy with BWD and he liked it.
