Greg I know you are into powermetalish stuff.. do you dig Evergrey? I have been listenin to Recreation Day and The Inner Circle a ton lately... a very good band. If you havent heard them.. go to it.
I'm a fairly big fan of Evergrey, I find them to be one of the few progressive metal bands for whom being emotive is a greater concern than superfluous playing. What I've heard of the new one sounds great.
evergrey is one of those bands who i always hear alot about and i bought in search of truth but it didn't grab me much. i probably will give them another shot at some point. i did however, see one or two of the members completely drunk at the progpower festival back in 2002.
the main power metallish stuff i have been spinning this week has been helloween for the most part. also a workstudy at my office let me rip annihilator's alice in hell from one of his mp3 cds so i have been giving that a proper listen in my car on a mix cd i made for our D.C. trip with my rough mixes from my studio sessions, allen iverson's "practice" comments, and the Angel theme!
Greg, have you ever heard "Ann Iverson's School of Repetition" from the Mark Patrick on Sports Show? good stuff.
I like Evergrey, they've got more threads than just prog going for them. And their secret weapon, the singer's wife, gives each CD just a little flavor. I've wondered why she doesn't have a contract herself.
InsideOut has just reissued the first two evergrey cds, and the first Vanden Plas cds. I just bought Vanden Plas - the God Thing and listened to it last night. good sturdy prog too often compared unfavorably to Dream Theater, only because DT was the first to bring prog metal to a profitable point. but Andy (unfortunately named) Kuntz does not sound anything like Labrie, Gunter Werno is nothing like any of the DT keyboardists...
