I've been on a huge technical DM binge for that last month or so and I'm getting a little tired of hearing the uber fast riffs and the blastbeats and I realized I don't have all that much groovy DM in my collection...

In case groovy DM is a vague term, I'm looking for something akin to Demilich

like this:

EDIT: stuff like Moondark is also appreciated, although I'm not sure if Moondark are considered Death or Doom (fucking genre-naming!)

I'm by no means a death metal authority, but I recently heard some tracks from Xerath's new record that were pretty groovy. They were also very overblown and symphonic (which is why I looked into it). Overall, I wasn't very impressed; but you might want to check them out.

I think Obituary is pretty much a given.
Man, I think I would've loved the band's music had it not been for Tardy.

Cadaver single-handedly destroyed my appreciation for most other tech death. Once I've gotten into In Pains, nothing else feels as good.:erk:

Thanks for the rec, I probably should have mentioned Bolt Thrower as something that I consider "groovy death metal" but Avigrus already mentioned it for me..some of the bands listed I'm already a fan of, but I did check out Xerath and Hatesphere

Xerath were pretty good, sounded like Meshuggah with an orchestra in the back haha..but like you said, nothing particularly impressive

Hatesphere had some killer riffs and were also pretty good, only they could use more growls instead of the Unearth-style vocals

Tardy is one of the best death metal vocalists ever. You fail, sir.
