Guitar Limiting

For people that limit their guitars, do your's really jump out that much to make it necessary...?

Being a noob, I want to ask a question...whats the use of putting a limiter in the guitar chain actually? A brief explanation will be much appreciated.

whats the use of putting a limiter in the guitar chain actually?

a limiter is just a compressor with a ratio anywhere above 10:1

sonically, limiters maintain a characteristic that increases perceived loudness eliminating signal overages (above unity gain) whereas a compressor will just lower the overall dynamic rage of your signal.

many people use several stages of compression to methodically control the more dynamic parts of a signal.

but, the reason anyone uses anything on any track (in digital audio) is simply a matter of choice.

i use a limiter on just about every track because i like the way it sounds.

I tried a limiter on my guitar bus in a recent mix but found it made them a bit harsh due to the fact that the limiter gets triggered by low frequency stuff (palm mutes etc) so I ended up removing it.
