Well Done! I see what you mean and I totally agree. While it sounds thin at first, when you bypass the EQ it makes me hate the original sound and all its woofy lowend. Plus with the cut you made, a bass guitar would fill that gap nicely.
As far as a recording chain, here is what I can remember.
Mesa Boogie Mark III Redstripe 100watt head
into a 2X12 with Greenback 4201 cones and a 4X12 Mesa with V30's
only the 2X12 was mic'd.
I used four microphones.
An off axis 57 about two inches away
An off axis Cascade Fathead on the same speaker two inches away
An Audix D6 on the back of the cab (it's halfway open)
An Omni measurement mic out in front of the cab (about 4 feet)
The woofy mess might be coming from the fact that I recorded three separate performances.
Left,Right,Middle
Which could easily overpower the palm mutes.
As far as in the box chain, just some panning and bussing.
