New issue of Guitar World (you probably already know since my subscription runs a few weeks late) has a good spread of Emperor. Check it out.

I'm quite dissatisfied with GW, however. Every other page is a full-page advertisement and if it's not an advertisement, it's either an article about Dimebag, Zakk Wylde, Jimi Hendrix, or Ozzy Osbourne. Last month had a decent but brief lesson with Dimmu, but the attention is still directed towards either has-beens or future has-beens. Sure, sometimes they cover some extreme bands, but the Dimmu lesson was the very first extreme metal lesson I've ever seen. How about some lessons with Nile, Behemoth, Nevermore, et al?

Does anyone else share this view or am I wishing in one hand and shitting in the other to see which one fills up faster?

Yeah and I've been reading for a long time as well, but 15 years ago is understandable. Extreme metal was truly underground. However, these days it's at least on the surface, although still a little underground. It's not below the radar anymore, and I see no excuse why it's still ignored.

I have all the old issues of GW, and in the late 90's, it was HORRIBLE. It's better today, but still has a long way to go.

Let's not split hairs, here.

I know they aren't everyone's favorite band because now it's not cool to like Dimmu Borgir, but let's face it: how many more times do we have to endure Dimebag suck-offs, Randy Rhoads tributes, and Zakk Wylde poser biker beer drinking stories?

I remember the Hellyeah issue...

They praised that piece of garbage up and down and in the interviews all the members were like, "Yeah, we could feel Dimebag guiding us through the whole thing." First of all, let's stop riding the man's coattails. Secondly, after the cd was released it became painfully obvious that these guitar magazines are nothing but an MTV for guitarists. Whosoever pays the most money gets the most attention...it's not about the quality of music or guitar anymore.

...but it still isn't as bad as the late 90's issues. All the great grunge bands had died and nu metal was just getting started. When they weren't covering nu metal, they were covering stuff like Matchbox 20. It was so horrible.

Jeff used to have a lesson column in it for quite a while i still have thie videos but for some reason it stopped (i think) which is mainly why i stopped reading it.

oh and everything in there was about dimebag.

one time probably 6-7 years ago i was looking at the guitar magazine rack, and on the cover of one of them was two masked goons with the large proclamation of Slipknot = Metal. i stopped looking at guitar magazines that day.

oddly enough, i click the guitar techniques link, and the current issue has Cobain on the front cover, with Nirvana tabs, and a contest with Zakk Wylde...... how much better is this? hahaha

I have a question about that. Do you know what issue Loomis started his column? I'm looking to buy back issues and I want to start from the beginning.

Thanks.

I remember that cover. At the time I was thinking "why do they have to affirm that Slipknot is metal?" it would be obvious either way to anyone that listens to metal whether or not Slipknot is metal.
