Guitars with Michael Wagener vid

Thanks for posting. I wish placing a 57 was that easy.

He places the mic's easy, but seems to struggle with the torch.

I would kill to see Andy do a Vid like this. :kickass:

Yeah I'm surprised that is all he is using are ribbon mics, generally they are darker mics than your usual suspects. But I guess Wagener kinda knows what he's doing...

And he even uses the Crane song tape sim which dulls it down even more, and I understand the choise totally... Who wants to hear those +10khz fizzes in guitars?

What was the point in using 2 of the same mic, in the same position on the cab?

Think he does that instead of double tracking? Is that kept in mono?

Remember when he flipped the phase to test their relationships? If he used the two speakers for "double tracking" instead of actually double tracking, it would phase out in the center when flipped L and R.

See the thread about stereo guitar recording techniques (that everyone thinks I'm wrong about :ill:)

kick, hihat, ride, overheads, room and ambience mics. I don't think thats too many, considering that some studios have even more Neumanns that cost three times the price.

it wasnt really meant in terms of how much they cost, after all with some studios the cost of another royer is pretty insignificant. its more to do with how much use they are likely to get.

granted, if i was in said studio, sure id use a couple of royers but certainly not as exclusively as this 'sales pitch' video has. most studio gearlists i see tend to have about 2/3 of these mics, and probably get on fine with that.

nah, he makes sense.
He set them up for optimal phase correctness, if he panned them hard and it was ever summed to mono the guitar would disappear.

Of course. I'm responding to chonchball. I thought he was saying you can't use two different speakers instead of double tracking, as they would "cancel," which isn't true.
