He uses the Chandler TG2 pre, I have one and if you push the input quite hard you'll get more bite, should work well with the Royers
Think he does that instead of double tracking? Is that kept in mono?
What? Flipped L and R? Panning doesn't change phase.
Where are the other parts of the vid?
kick, hihat, ride, overheads, room and ambience mics. I don't think thats too many, considering that some studios have even more Neumanns that cost three times the price.

nah, he makes sense.
He set them up for optimal phase correctness, if he panned them hard and it was ever summed to mono the guitar would disappear.
