More fat on the fire in Atkins diet row: founder weighed 18 stone at death

By Maxine Frith Social Affairs Correspondent

11 February 2004

He made a fortune by telling millions of people how to lose weight without cutting out their bacon and eggs. But yesterday it emerged that Dr Robert Atkins, pioneer of the controversial low-carb regime, was clinically obese when he died.

Medical records have revealed that the 72-year-old weighed 18 stone when he slipped and suffered fatal head injuries on an icy footpath in New York last April.

He was also suffering from heart disease, according to a leaked report by the New York City medical examiner's office.

from an article posted on dailyrotten.com

'During his coma, as he deteriorated and his major organs failed, fluid retention and bloating dramatically distorted his body and left him at 258 pounds at the time of his death, a documented weight gain of over 60 pounds,' the doctor said in a written statement. 'How and why the Journal reported that he was obese, remains the only unanswered question in this pathetic situation.'

RARAR

It is trendy things like the Atkins diet which makes my job (fitness training) magnitudes more difficult. At the moment, it's a challenge to convince a lot of women who read magazines that including some carbohydrates in their diet won't instantly add four dress sizes.

Just like trying to convince them that pilates and yoga isn't all you need to look like Jennifer Anniston, and that lifting weights heavier than 2kg won't make your arms bulk up like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

FUCKING DEATH TO TRENDY WOMEN'S MAGAZINES *rantrant* :yell:

Ok I'm done.

I worked out three days a week for months before I even started getting a shape. Now I need to start doing it again before I start to look like a pear.

I use the Spawn Super Exercise Program. If you think about doing exercise, its just as good as actually doing it.

Yeah, you need pilates, yoga AND Atkins!

At my gym I once overheard one of the instructors talking about diet with someone else. "Protein is what builds muscles. Carbo's only make you smart, so you should start eating more protein."

I thought it was funny at the time. It must have been the way he said it. Now I've written it down it looks like good advice. It's the "only" in there that I found amusing.

And Gore: Pear is a shape :)
