Hey Mark, I actually live in the 'burbs of Maryland about 10 mins from DC - but it's all part of the DC metro area. A lot of DC is pretty ghetto as is the eastern part of the metro area incl. south east DC and Prince Georges County. Basically, every night on the news someone has been shot in PG County or DC. Two notable shootings I remember was one in the car park of the Six Flags amusement park and some kids were shot in a drive by shooting while they were getting ice cream from an ice cream van. If that shit happened in Perth it'd be in the news for weeks but everyone is so desensitized to it, it gets a minute on the news and that's it.

I actually work in PG County but in the area that is actually ok for the most part. The western parts of DC are really nice and there are some really wealthy areas. I live to the North which is kinda half way between the two extremes. The Washington sniper actually killed a few people within 5 mins of where I live - one of them outside the grocery store at the back of where I live, but it's actually a pretty safe area in general.
