Well well well...there is some fucking awesome music on this album. I think it is definitely a bit bloated and would have been a stronger 8 - 10 track album over one disc, but still it is great to hear some bullshit good songs from Metallica.

Thoughts?

Totally agree, it could easily be a 40-50min album, and it would be great, it is a good mix of the entire era's of the band. Just seems so far to bloated, I think the 2nd disc had 2 songs I actually remembered as good

On first listen I didn't like it much at all, but it keeps growing on me. I really love a lot of this album now.

Not knowing how to cut the fat out of an album seems to be a recurring theme with that band. Still, sounds like it's worth checking out, so I will do so.

I like it. Haven't listened to it in enough detail to absolutely identify anything that absolutely be cut, so it's pretty consistent throughout.

With more and more listens, there is more to like. I still think a lot of the songs meander along aimlessly and rather needlessly

I listened to it through once while I was doing something else and found it quite boring. However, it sounds like it's a bit of a grower, so I will try again.

I can still only find maybe 4 standout tracks across 2 discs. The 3rd disc in the special edition is pretty good, but the band have always been killer live.

Is it better/worse/on par with Death Magnetic?

Better. It sounds somewhat like a cross between Death Magnetic and 90s Metallica. Still on my to-buy list.

Production is better on the album than Death Magnetic, it feels looser
