AZCentral‘s Ed Masley is reporting that as the members of Heart were preparing to take the stage at PHX Arena, formerly Footprint Center, in Phoenix on Thursday, March 6, their tour photographer came out to share the news that Ann Wilson would be performing in a wheelchair less than a year after rescheduling the tour to complete chemotherapy for cancer.
“It is not the cancer, OK?” the photographer added. “The cancer has not returned. What’s happened is one week before the tour, Ann had an accident and broke three parts of her elbow. It was quite painful. And let me tell you what. You’d better know, Ann Wilson was presented with the idea to cancel this show and she said, ‘Hell no.'”
In a recent episode of Wilson’s podcast After Dinner Thinks with Ann Wilson, the singer explained, “I chose to sit because then I can just concentrate on singing and not on keeping my balance and having somebody out there catching me when I reel to the side.”
And to be clear, her voice remains a fiery force of nature that at times felt as though it may have aged into an even more expressive instrument in the 50 years since Heart released their debut album, Dreamboat Annie.
Of course, it also felt at times like she was backing down from certain notes that would’ve sounded almost effortless when she was in her 20s, the way most singers of a certain age begin to do. She didn’t even try to hit those high notes on that “down, down, down, down on my knees” part of the chorus hook to “Barracuda,” for example.
