heartwork clip

Pretty cool dude, I'd say you did a good job approximating the fuzziness those guitars have, but that's about all I can hear; it doesn't have the chunk or cut that they do that is really necessary IMO, so I'd say a bit less mids and more presence! Getting there though! (and there's no bass in this, right?)

I thought the sound was pretty good. I think your playing could be a little tighter tho. AFAIK they used several tracks for the rhythm guitars. 5150's, Marshall anniversay heads, and even that little mini stack.
Of course this won't really work in your favor if you don't make sure you're playing extremely tight.
Great song.

Thank you very much for your feedback. Truly appreciated. I know my playing is sloppy, unfortunately I would say it's the best I did so far - I am crappy player, yes :). I will, however, re-record and try to improve it. Would you please point out the 2-3 places where you find my playing the most sloppy? As it's difficult for me to perceive it (except on one part or another).

I used an Ibanez RG1527 + pod x3 live, one track each side, same setting but one of the sides has a maxon od808 in it, both of them thru an ISP Decimator with the same setting. I am using a midi which I exported from a Guitar Pro tab of this song, if you want it, let me know your email and I will share it. The drums are made using ezdrummer with the drumkit from hell expansion kit and the daw is cubase sx 2, given that I cannot afford SX4 for Vista 64 :-)

EDIT: Ah, I should also verify the mix in different reference sources, currently only checked against my m-audio BX5, which are supposedly "crappy quality" :-)

I would say mostly the very beginning palm mutes. Also, I'm pretty sure you're adding extra mutes on the verse riff that give it a weird feel. The squeels could also be a little better. More confident.

Just slow it down a lot and practice it slowly because on some parts it almost sounds like you aren't sure how many times to pick. You got to know exactly what's going on at all times to be able to play tight, and then you have to play exactly the same on the next track.

And I agree you did a good job programming the drums. Goodluck

So I decided to give it a break. I am now listening to it again through in-ear headphones and noticing lots of little mistakes. If I had done this before, I would not have posted it here for sure :-). Funny that you mention the drums should be louder, because that's been always one of my problems in mixing with my current pair of monitors (maybe even the acoustics of my studio room are helping here). I never know how loud is too loud.. and the thing that really makes me wonder, is the fact that this is my first mix where I thought the drums were sounding a little loud?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I already have enough feedback to work with. Not going to set an expectation when I will come with a next mp3, because I would like to really improve things on the rhythm before I move into the lead bits.

I'm so glad to hear some fella Carcass fans here! You did quite good job on programming the drums, although mixed'em too quiet IMHO.

I think the palm mutes and the vibe of your playing needs some serious improvement to nail this song perfectly. I think you should concentrate more
on your playing to get the groove on, and I'm sure you will, since the clip sounds very promising, cheers! :kickass:
