Very briefly, it's about exactly what the title suggests. Only the stranger is an alien who uses his "charm" to create a virtual army of devoted followers, deeming him a "god" of sorts. It's very much a "god-complex" type novel and the ethics/ramifications felt by society in general. Damned good book.

It is. A fantastic book, especially if you've never read anything by Heinlein. Probably one of his more accessible and easy-to-read books as well.
