Sadly, all things come to an end and another multi-day Texas extravaganza is now in the history book. Amazing how quickly that the fans and bands that survived, are home, already dreaming of “next year.” The day began with promoter Christian Larson’s Night Cobra entertaining early arrivals. He COULD slot his band anywhere, but props for NOT pulling rank.
One of the most chaotic, over-the-top reactions witnessed in recent years was all the young-ins going ape for Hellripper. A non-stop barrage of circle pitting, slamming and crowd surfing as the Scottish kids goaded the crowd, then tore through a career spanning repertoire of gurgling death voiced speed metal. Great festival vibe! Primordial offered something a little more lumbering and heavy. The Night Eternal made their North American debut, to a rapid throng.
Glad I checked out the San Antonio Slayer set, as it turned out to be an all-star line-up, including Ron Jarzombeck (WatchTower), Jason McMaster (WatchTower/Dangerous Toys/Igntor) on vocals, Don Van Stavern (Riot V) on bass, Sacred Reich drummer Dave McClain and original guitarist (ex-Juggernaut) Bob Catlin. While not familiar with the vintage stuff, presented by legendary professionals. Good stuff.
The rest of the night was reserved for the foreigners (well, apart from guitarist John Christ playing a set of Danzig material he had a hand in creating): Coroner, Samael and Saxon, who unceremoniously had the plug pulled on “Princess Of The Night”, due to a hard 11PM curfew on the outdoor stage. But we did get the full “Ride Like The Wind.” Like I said, hard choices…
Early bird tickets for 2026 (March 19-21) are available now.
