Hello fellow Opeth freaks!!

Greetings everyone.
It was inevitable that I would end up here sooner or later since Opeth is easily the most amazing band on the planet. As with alot of things, I'm a "Johnny come lately." I just got into Opeth about a year ago. My Arms Your Hearse was my first Opeth purchase (The best $16 I've EVER spent!) I have to admit - it wasn't really what I was expecting, but I immediately knew I discovered something special.

One of the things that blows me away with this band is that I've been listening to Opeth cd's EVERYDAY for the last year and have not even come close to burn-out like you do with some bands. I'm sure some of you can relate to this. Listening to the song "Harvest" has become a nightly ritual for me while sparking the bong. I LOVE THAT SONG MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF!!!! Opeth is one of the few bands that could put out an all acoustic/ballad album and their fans would still love them just the same.

I have not seen them play live yet, but that is definitely at the top of the list.

The ONLY other band that ever inspired me as much as Opeth is SKINNY PUPPY. For those of you who don't already know, Skinny Puppy is the shit!!!!

Other bands I'm into:
Puppy, Download, Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend, Voivod, Meshuggah, Fear Factory, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Neurosis, Today Is The Day, Isis, Luddite Clone, Human Remains, Burnt By The Sun, Nasum, His Hero Is Gone, Deadguy, Coalesce, Unsane, Spiral Architect, Gordian Knot, Splattercell, Diamanda Galas, The Meters, John Mclaughlin/Trilok Gurtu, Steve Tibbets, King Crimson, Rush (old), and of course...Hendrix.

Help a brother out (fill in the blank)...

If you like Opeth you should check out____________.

Someone tell me about Porcupine Tree. Mikael keeps mentioning this band in interviews and I'm definitely curious.

I think that's enough for my first post.

Later

Welcome, may your life forever more be filled with Opeth. And as for Porcupine Tree I only have Lightbulb Sun on cd and it's great stuff, I also checked out this band because Mikael gave them a lot of praise. They with out a doubt deserve it.

Man I'm with you all the way on "Harvest". That song is fuckin incredible. I love it too. And you have got to see them live. They are excellent.

I usually promote Devin Townsend as much as possible, but I see you've already got him down.

Well, I think the consensus of this board is that Dark Tranquility seems to be the popular choice for "other" favourite band, so I'd suggest you check them out. Katatonia is also a big local favourite... check out Brave Murder Day, which features heavy vocals by Mike Akerfeldt, and their excellent new record, Last Fair Deal Gone Down.

Porcupine Tree are cool in a prog/pop sorta way, although I haven't actually purchased any of their records yet.

Ummm... as a result of this board, I've recently been getting into bands like Empyrium, Tenhi and Estatic Fear, which are all similar to Opeth in that they incorporate a LOT of acoustics (I think they're all primarily acoustic, actually) with some metal. They're all much more "folky" than Opeth, though.

Past that, my own favourites and stand-by's include: Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, Nightingale, Unicorn) -- I highly recommend Edge of Sanity's "Crimson", which also features an appearance by Mike Akerfeldt --, Ulver, In Flames, Amorphis, Nightwish, Therion, Anathema, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who, Miles Davis, Nick Drake... the list goes on.

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone, as well as the info. I'll probably pick up some Porcupine Tree on my lunch break today and it looks like I'm going to have to check out Dark Tranquility as well. I keep seeing their name pop up here and there so it looks like I'm going to have to lay down some more cash. Fuck it, it's for a good cause.

I you like Opeth you should check out Camel, a nice british progband and also Opeths biggest influence. Not that they sound that similar to Opeth, but you can hear some Camel influences in Opeth´s music.

Apart from Opeth and Camel I enjoy bands like (in no particular order):
Iron Maiden (my all time favorite band), Dream Theater, Anathema, Nevermore, Therion, Katatonia, At The Gates, Dissection, Dimmu Borgir, Kovenant, Vader, The Crown, Amorphis, Pink Floyd, Judas Priest, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, The Haunted, Entombed, Manowar, old Metallica, Fates Warning, Symphony X, Deicide, Morbid Angel, old Helloween, Blind Guardian, Bruce Springsteen, old Magnus Uggla, Pantera, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Cradle Of Filth, Deep Purple, In Flames, Vintersorg, Dropkick Murphys, Arch Enemy, Borknagar, Hellacopters, Philemon Arthur & the Dung (I´m really impressed if someone outside Sweden have ever heard of them!), Turbonegro and, of course, Onkel Kånkel.

Fudge! I forgot The Kristet Utseende. Too bad they don´t exist any more. =( "Pang på pungen i Portugal" is so goddamn great!

Yes, Onkel Kånkel is toilethumour, but they have done som freaking fun tracks like "Ferdinand", "Smek mig Guran", "Staffan var en Stjärtgosse" and "Lage var ett macho". =)

Philemon Arthur & the Dung is probably the coolest swedish band ever. And the fact that they are from Skåne make them even better. "Blomman", "In kommer Gösta", "Henning i sin presenning", "Men va fanken" - hits, hits, hits. By the way, have you seen when they got their Grammy for Musikens Historia 1972? Magnus and Brasse presents them, but no one is coming onstage. Instead they bring a cassetterecorder that plays "In kommer Gösta".

*LoL* ...no, I've missed that, but it sounds great man....

(*a little worried for being flamed 'cause were discussing really off topic sweden-related things here....*)

YOU OBSCURE-SWEDISH-STUFF TALKIN' BASTARDS!!!

Heh. I don't care.
I remember somebody verbally assaulting someone else for that elsewhere. It's cool, man. It's an open board for a reason... it's not like there's a "discuss only Opeth entirely in English" clause you have to agree to or anything. And, the guy who flamed you was only voicing his opinion as well, which he is also entitled to, but whatever.

A duck's quack doesn't echo, and cat urine glows under a black light. Apparently.

Heeh, they're not even talking Swedish. Only the artists and song titles are Swedish. :p

I suppose you are referring to me? =) I didn't flame the guys, I just made a notion that it's more comfortable in here (the forum) if we all speak English mostly.

Vai mitä?

*laughing*
This board (and the people on it) are really great. We'll try to keep the discussion of The Kristet Utssende (a totally hilarious swedish humor band if anyone was wondering) down to a minimum. ;-) I understand that it won't interest the majority of the visitors. *hehe*

Still it's great to have this board where your discussions don't have to be 100% Opeth-related and people are still friendly and give thoughtfull and intelligent views and opinions... It must be that Opeth-fans ARE intelligent, thoughtfull and ... well... just plain nice. =)

...AND anal. I don't think I'll ever forget that. I thought I was being called an ass.

And Hoser (again) you come out with the damndest things!

Apparently you're a goofball. Nice to meet ya. :spin:

You think that was odd?

You ain't seen nuthin' yet, babe. Wait until I start quoting my own ramblings in here... Mua Ha ha! MUAA HAA HAA! AHHHHAHAHAHA!!*cough* *cough* *hack* ugh... (adjusts proverbial tie, strokes cliche "bad guy" moustache)

Oh, and nice to meet you too.
