Helloween - Unarmed

That´s a nice approach for a "Best Of". I used to listen to Helloween many years ago. It´s funny to hear these versions, I bet I still know how to play many of these songs on bass by heart. Nome from my favourite album (bette than raw), though.

This blows

Helloween has always been one of my top 5 bands and is in fact the reason I ever picked up a guitar ... more becasue of Kai Hansen but that should give you an idea of how long I've been a fan ;)

This "best of" is total bullshit. I don't entirely despise the songlist, although I would say about 1/2 of these tunes shouldn't be on here because they are not a "best of" tune and in some cases they are just too new still. That and the fact that they skipped over some VERY important songs from their career. How can you have a 25th anniversary cd with NOTHING from "Walls"? They used to end every concert with the song "How Many Tears" and yet there is nothing at all from "Walls" on here. Or how about the fact that like 40% of these tunes are ballads? Helloween has made some great ballads but that is NOT their trademark sound. These guys fucking invented "power metal".

On top of all that, I find it remarkable that differences could not be set aside briefly and a way could not be found to have Kiske singing at least SOMETHING on here. I love Deris' vocals, I think he is the perfect singer for Helloween as they have been over the past 15 years but c'mon ... Kiske was an essential part to their sound for quite a while and in my opinion still one of the best vocalists out there. How about letting Uli in on the drums for a song, or Grapow letting loose on a couple leads. Anything. They keep saying this is a "thank you" to the fans. Well, I've been a BIG fan for 22 years now, I have EVERY cd, EVERY single, I won't track my guitars in the studio without my fucking lucky "Keepers I" cutoff tour shirt ... I see this as more of a big "Fuck you". This will be the 1st cd by them that I will not buy. I am truly disappointed but have enough faith in them that their next actual studio album will be awesome as usual

Ok, rant over :p

I share your sentiment, Carlos!

I don't even have the slightest desire to pick up my radio promo, let alone even buying this. Listening to the samples, I just don't think this was executed well at all, for many of the reasons you're mentioning and even more. Like the actual arrangements and performance.

And I will probably never ever get accustomed to Deris singing the Kiske tunes. That guy just doesn't have the range. Plain and simple. Every Helloween gig I've seen, Deris sounded bloody awful at the Keeper tunes. Kain hansen doesn't have the Kiske pipes either, but when he breaks out into staples like "I Want Out", he sounds sooo much better than Deris, it's not even funny.

Its been hit or miss with him singing the Kiske era stuff ... at least for me

I saw them in NJ on the "Rabbit" tour and I have to say, Deris fucking NAILED those older tunes. I was very skeptical about how he would sound doing them because of a bunch of shit I had read but man, that dude fucking bowled me over with his vocal performance, with a damn smoke hanging out his mouth half the time too! hahaha

I may have just been lucky that night because I have heard some bad shit on some videos.

But yeah man, this cd is bullshit. I know Kiske has some major issues still, mostly with Weiki but he seems to be good with doing stuff with Hansen, and Hansen and Weiki have gotten over whatever their problems were ... for the sake of the fans and the fact that Kiske was such an important part of the band, he needed to be on this somewhere. I doubt he was even approached but if he was and said no, well then he's just as much a dick as Weiki ever was and it still validates my position that this release is in no way a "Thank You" to their fans

I can't imagine that they approached Kiske... no way haha..

And the whole situation is kinda ironically if you keep in mind that Kiske himself releases this not too long ago:

;)

Hahahaha ... ja that was the 1st thing to cross my mind when I found out what approach they were taking for this cd :D

The other funny thing too is no one can say anything like they only did this to make some quick, easy money. If they had been able to release an anniversary cd with Hansen, Kiske, Kusch & Grapow involved, can you imagine how THAT would sell? ;)

I'm a Helloween fan too, and i can say that this "helloween" is totally another band from what hansen or kiske era was. But still i like some albums with Deris for example the vocals on sole survivor or where the rain grows are quite amazing. Although you can not judge the band because the rotation of the musicians has been quite large. Anyway thanks for the post!

EDIT:BTW.... what the hell they were thinking with that "25th anny album"... a POP album?

The first time I listened to Helloween was Wall Of Jericho. Many things have changed since then, but I still love the band.

I agree with Carlos in most he said and I like to add...

Helloween + Hansen singing ... fucking ruled.
Helloween + Kiske singing ... fucking ruled (except. Chameleon)
Helloween + Deris singing ... fucking rules

Different eras, but great albums.

But this CD is a bit... weird.
I guess it is only just for fun and to do something different to get out of the routine. Next studio album will be another great masterpiece... I hope.
