Well, it's not surprising I didn't even know these grym Norwegians had not 1, but 3 full-length albums already. What do they, just mass produce them every year?

Anyway, I finally got around to listening to 2003's Liberation. Good album, not great IMO. Perhaps it'll get better with future listens. I still liked it more than their EP.

So the question is, are Beyond the Apocalypse and Hellfire improvements, or more of the same (as Liberation)?

I definitely agree on the "too many blasts" part, but I found myself pretty much digging the riffs and headbanging pieces.

Just wondering if their last 2 albums were worth purchasing if I wasn't totally in love with their debut.

I'd say no. It's just more of the same. Another band in the same vein (that Henrik also happends to be a fan of) is Tsjuder. I don't really them either, but I think they're slightly better than 1349.

Good, I would have gotten a bad conscience had you simply picked it up without checking it out first! (It's no "Pure Holocaust" or "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", let me tell you.)

Although, judging from what I've heard of your record collection, I'm surprised you don't have it already! :)

Ha ha, truth.

I basically stopped buying up everything in sight sometime in 2003, which is when I had some career issues (read: less money to spend) and had to leave RC as a webzine contributor). I've probably bought less than 20 metal CDs in the past 2 years, and now of course I'm feeling the urge to get some new stuff that I may have missed.

I don't fucken even know where to begin!

Both "Beyond.." and "Hellfire" are pretty chaotic and intense, but with a more "melodic" approach than "Liberation" - some tasty leads (leads may not be the right word, when thinking about it) are thrown in here and there, and the songs are more epic. They still do some of the short black-thrash headbanging songs too, though (see "Sculptor Of Flesh").

The thing with 1349 and Tsjuder is that the songs come off as way too chaotic and lifeless the first couple of spins, but the more you listen to it, the more you notice those "hidden" melodic parts and excellent riffs underneath the hyperblasting brutality.

I'd check out "Beyond The Apocalypse", "Hellfire" and Tsjuder's "Desert Northern Hell" if I were you. I think you'll like them.

ha ha, you're such an ass
I'm sure they're all reasonably good albums and if you like them more power to you but ugh... I just can't fucking stand stand black metal bands that are content to do what has been done 500000000000000000 times before
