<--- FAG.

so is don't break the oath the best place to start? tell me now because i just had a beer at lunch and will have no problems spending $8 for a used cd right now.

Yes "Dont Break The Oath" is perfect to start, either that or "Melissa", my fav. is "Dont Break The Oath" while my fav song is the same titled of "Melissa". You can also check "Time" which is more melodic, but has many ass kicking songs with some unbelievably catchy melodies, like "Lady In Black".

IoftheStorm got it right. You must have Melissa and Don't Break the Oath. They're like mandatory metal to the HIGHEST F'ING DEGREE. Even people like Nate the Great will back me up on that. :kickass:

I was going to rant on about people still not owning Mercyful Fate albums, but hey, "FAG" just about sums it up.

By the way NAD, I see you bought "Don't break the Oath".

Check out track #5, "The Oath".

Right there....that's the one. That song is history in the making. You can take your Metallicas, Megadeths, Slough Fegs, Hammers, plus a whole slew of other metal bands (including Darkthrone and Emperor) and see where Mr. Inspiration met Miss Creativity and fucked her deep up the arse until she wept tears of KY jelly.

I bought some Mercyful Fate stuff in the '80s and was pretty lukewarm on it, mostly because I just couldn't get into KD's vocals. I later tried to get into some of his solo stuff too, and while I liked the music I just hated his style. Not too long ago I picked up some of that same Mercyful Fate stuff, and I really like it. The vocals are much more tolerable than they became over the years, and the material just clicked with me in general.
I'm wondering if some of the other 30+ year olds on the board had a similar experience w/ vocals. Most of the 80's I was listening to Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, Megatallislaythrax, Armored Saint, Motorhead, etc--bands that all had pretty accessible vocals. My early experiences w/ Kreator, Death, Sepultura, and the like were frustrating because I just couldn't get into the different vocal styles. The only bands that really clicked w/ me before the very late 80's were Celtic Frost and Venom. Later I came back to all of those bands and had a much easier time adjusting to the different sound. Just took me awhile to get used to them. Anyone else?

i dont own any. about 13 years ago, my older bros buddy, the resident "metal dude", tried to get me to listen to them and i just laughed.

i almost bought a couple KD albums the other day when i went to get "once was not" but cheaped-out.

okay listened to don't break the oath a few times. thoughts:

riffs: :headbang:
solos: :headbang:
bass: :headbang:
drums: :headbang:
sounds dated: :headbang: (that means no)
vocals: :guh:

i know, i'm not very metal to dislike king diamond. but GOD DAMN WHY DOES HE SING THAT WAY?!?!?!

hahaha he sounds like a monkey on The Oath right now.

in high school i used to be able to hit notes like KD ... my friends used to make me sing shit on the school bus ... then my pubes finally grew out :loco:

Yeah, his vox at first are like a rabid monkey getting castrated. After a while, it begins to fit the whole b-movie horror image thing.

Notice how he tamed them down for his latter King Diamond days...see: Puppet Master.

i don't hate them, but they are sorta goofy. i mean it does work for the music, but still.

here's what's getting me: WHO THE FUCK IS THIS BASSIST!??!! he totally smokes!!! :kickass:

Think of his vox, and then think about death growls, or blackened screams, or hardcore grunts. If you think about it in that perspective, his are pretty normal, heh.

This reminds me of a band description I just saw on Redstream.

Redstream said:
This is the band from "His Eminence The Wicked", ex- HEMLOCK. They've recently released a debut miniCD called "Devil Worship". I was sent a copy in the mail a few days ago and it hasn't left my stereo since. It's fucking excellent black / heavy metal in the style of old MERCYFUL FATE, RUNNING WILD, BATHORY, SLAYER and VENOM with solid musicianship and killer, jetblack production. It's some of the best stateside metal I've heard in years. I urge anyone who calls themself a metalhead to check into [Terror of the Trees].
