Gospel music was influence in jazz and blues. In fact, jazz blues and gospel ( and charleston but its is just a form of jazz imho ) influenced each other in their starts. All forms of music and rythm can be valid if properly executed, if you at all like any jazz or bands with jazz influence, listen to Thelonious Monk, he brings gospel and charleston elements to modern jazz and he is a damn legend, i love his music.

Go Misanthrope!!!
I'm HUGE into jazz. Thelonious Monk is amazing. My absolute favourite is Myles Davis. I agree that jazz and gospel paved the way for more traditional music, especially metal. Actually, the things that i like about metal are quite similar to the things i like about jazz. Very technical, also i like jazz with no vocals the same way that i like metal with "growling", because the growls are used basically as another instrument, instead of the main thing. A lot of current music downplays other instruments (background instruments), but i think they are just as important, if not moreso.
