Yeah I thought the whole hardcore punk straight edge movement was a direct response to hippiedom.

I think it was more of a reaction against hedonistic rock, and/or drug use among other punks...but who cares anyway, straightedge is for losers who can't hold their booze. Hippie only works as an insult when it comes out of Cartman's mouth.
