But we have been warned.

'In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together. '

-Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961

Hopefully all of this is untrue.

Nnno, actually everything in that article is true. It meshes perfectly with my recollections of spring 2003, when war against Saddam was engineered by the White House. Here are the best portions of that article:

(George W. Bush) predicted that the war would be won "without destruction" and said planning was under way for "post-Saddam Iraq".

That's correct. All one has to do to understand it, is to check out the $2,000,000,000 embassy compound that's still being built. Yes, that's TWO BILLION DOLLARS for one fuckin embassy!

"I think there is a good basis for a better future," he said. "Iraq has a good bureaucracy and a relatively robust civil society."

Hah. They fucked that one up. Too bad the entire goddamned civil service and bureaucracy answered to Saddam and his secret police. Once they vanished, so did the average town notary public!

Outlining contacts between Saddam and Egypt, Mr Bush said: "He's indicated he would be prepared to go into exile if he's allowed to take $1bn and all the information he wants about weapons of mass destruction." Mr Bush ruled out such a deal, describing Saddam as "a thief, a terrorist, a war criminal".

Yeah, it was basically George W. finally gettin' Saddam. WHICH I thought was long overdue. However, going to war to create a puppet in Iraq and bizarre dreams of democracy in the Middle east is bullshit.

But we know all that.

I find the last paragraph interesting. Sodom Hussein would agree to go into exile if he was paid off and could take all of the information about WMD's with him. -Interesting.
