just curious, don't even really know why I was thinking about this... I've always panned them hard left and right out of.... instinct? I don't really know. I kind of feel like panning them not as far makes more sense though.

Hard left and hard right, for my room it sounds the best.

plus when I have a room mic about 6 ft in front of the kit, it blends the two OH's together

Harder than playing COD on Veteran wearing a blind fold with broken fingers...

normally base it on the position of the overheads, if you just have two, then hard left and right... try and position it so the snare is dead centre...

I'm starting to really like mono/barely panned overheads. A good example is The Satalite Years by Hopesfall. It makes the guitars sound wide as hell.

seems im in the minority here lol.

60L/R.

I just imagine being at a gig and the drums being more in the middle of the picture than super super wide.

yeah that's kind of what I've been thinking... but at the same time, I've always been of the state of mind that the recording and live are two very different things.

Those of you who aren't panning wide, why not just use XY placement (maybe some of you are) and pan wider? This way you still get a more centered stereo image PLUS mono compatibility.

80/80 here, my guitars are panned harder.

@ BLUELightCorey: I will try that out next time, it has been a while since I tried out XY. I love the sound of my overheads at the moment though.

Depend of OH micing technique and what I looking for. But for answer I pan between 70/70 and 60/60 on a metal oriented drum kit miced with spaced pairs.
