How much does a good trumpet cost?

They're loud. Do you live in an apartment? You could get in trouble with a trumpet. I played one a few times. Takes a lot of air. Not sure of the cost. I'd bet around a grand or more for a nice one.

It totally depends. Understanding basic music theory / experience on another brass instrument would make learning trumpet a speedier process.

My french horn, which is completely decent cost me about £1200, which is around $2000. I believe a trumpet of similar quality could be bought for quite a bit less.

Yeah, I definitely know a bit of theory, but I have absolutely no experience with any brass or woodwinds... I'm *guessing* it would be quite a bit easier to learn trumpet on my own than tabla (a failed venture! almost impossible to learn without instruction).

I think trying to self-teach yourself a brass instrument would be pretty hard. I'd suggest taking a month or so or real lessons to get some basic fundamentals.

once you get the lips concept down, i think trumpet (or euphonium or any three-valve instrument) isn't hard to get "okay" at. then you have a VERY long hard road toward mastering your tone and control and range which takes years of building up your lip muscles and stuff. but i don't think that that's necessarily much harder to do yourself than any other instrument.

not sure about the cost, but from my experience, if you've got musical background, the basics aren't TOO hard to learn...the hardest part is being able to control the sound properly, and be able to hit the notes you want when you want to hit them.
fun to play though, that's for sure.

i'd suggest looking at local colleges' music students for lessons. students tend to have been playing for several years, and may charge less- grad students would be good, but undergrad would possibly help too with just starting out. but def work on finding lessons to start out- just trying from scratch could take much longer, and even some basic lessons would probably save you time learning.

and i'd not suggest buying a "good" trumpet to begin learning- i never bought a trumpet, but good ones would probably be in the area of what people said, like $1-2000 if not more. buying a used one would be cheaper, maybe just a few hundred dollars? if you're serious, do some research on instrument makes/names; bach and besson were okay from what i remember.

<3 the trumpet i've played since i was 4 i used to have a teeeeeny kiddie one.
look on craigslist.org for a good beginner's used one? you could probably also barter/exchange lessons for something else (butt sex?)

also i'm going to totally piggy back this threaad and say that i want a new flute as mine has taken the dead road and no longer plays =[

i used to have this tiny white plastic trumpet with an orange bell and three (actually, might have been four) little orange WORKING valves that i could play songs on. it ruled and i played it tons even when the bell broke off.

haha yeah the mouthpiece was like light blue i think! when i hit fourth grade and couldn't learn the baritone horn/euphonium because they didn't have any available (not til sixth grade) my next choice was the trumpet probably due to that beloved toy!

My first saxophone was a blue plastic one with Donald Duck on it. I think we had the plastic trumpet around somewhere too, if memory serves me correctly.
