How's this as reference?

OK, here is the link containing both articles from SOS about metal production from December '09 and January '10 in PDF format.

I have also included the audio tracks in MP3. They pretty much sum up everything that has been said on this forum already but it is a good read and there are color photos too.
It is free to view on the SOS web site so im sure I can share this here.

I don't use references, unless I am mastering (which is simply for RMS levels).

Why mix to a reference which has been mastered? The sonics can be vastly different - so, as I see it, there's very little point in trying to mix something against a reference.

Each band is different - and unless they're a dead replica (eg: AC/DC & Airbourne) then I'm never going to try and match the dynamics and sound of a record.

I make records that sound like they're done by me (for better or worse).
