HUGE FUCKING DEAL ON A GREAT MIC

Sterling = MXL. Nothing grand about this one. I do have one (along with an ST33 and ST44) and it's just alright. Wouldn't use it for any vocals, just some acoustic instruments from time to time, or if I'm doing something M/S.

Sterling is def not MXL.. The lower end Sterling is based on Grovetubes mics . Also theres no MXL mics with a fully discrete design, 8 Micron Capsule, Coupled Transformer, and a huge film capacitor built it.. It has all the qualities of a mic much more then this price. I own one and I also own a lott of other mics, this one def holds its own.

Not sure why you would say that Sterling = MXL? Sterling is most definitely not part of the Marshall Corporation which MXL certainly is. While both are located in California - MXL in El Segundo and Sterling in Thousand Oaks - they are totally separate companies.

Perhaps you are referring to them being equal in quality to MXL, I can't vouch for that as I have not used a Sterling mic. Seems to be some information over at Gearslutz however if you search for it.

I think they both use the same (or similar) off the shelf Chinese made bodies. This was the source of some confusion in other things I've read.

Yeah but that doesn't necessarily kill a mic. Mojave stuff is Chinese, but royer designed (or something like that).

Avantone mics are 100% Chinese parts assembled in the USA, and they are not exactly on the cheap end of things (well I guess they sort of are at $500 and $1k).

any clips of stuff recorded with this mic... I've read lots of good reviews online, but still.. I don't like buying something I haven't heard

Oh, I certainly didn't mean to imply a negative...just sighting the most likely source of confusion.

I boycott anything made in China on general principle. I suggest that anyone who cares about human rights do the same, whenever possible (I realize it's a challenge.)

I'm not trying to derail the thread. Years ago (before I knew better) I had a Studio Projects C1 condenser and it was halfway decent I guess. I've not heard good things about MXL though.
