hz

I have used the HZ's before and I liked them OK. I've used the H4 and H2. The H4 is supposed to be like a passive version of an 81, and the H2 is more like an 85 I've heard.
For the price, I like them a lot, and would probably use them again if I went passive. I've never used the 7 string versions, but I'd imagine they are very close to the 6 string versions.

FWIW, Alexi Laiho uses an H4 in his custom ESP and he could have anything.

I had some stock HZ's in my Jackson SLSMG. I liked them okay, but they were fairly dark sounding. They had a nice low end and a hefty sound as I remember, but lacked in definition. I replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan "Full Shred" and got a much brighter, edgier sound.
I'm sure for certain tastes, they would be perfect.

EMG Hz's are actually pretty clear, but they have no output. I have a Jackson SLSMG (which I absolutely love!) with those things in it. The HZ's will be on ebay soon to help finance the 81/85's that will replace them.

I hate the way the SLSMG looks with humbuckers installed.

Do you have the satin black one? Because that's exactly what I say about mine with the Duncan in it. It looks terrible. Oh well, I rarely play it as I favor my SL2H in which the Duncans look right at home.

Tachy, what 7-string do you have, and what kind of sound you're looking for. Either way, I'm positive that the EMG Hz isn't going to deliver it for you.

I'm mainly a Duncan guy, and I use the Jazz-7/JB-7 combo in my stuff. If you want more bottom end, replace the JB-7 with the Custom-7.

My 7-string Soloist had a 81-7 in it, but I ripped it out pretty quick. Too harsh and biting. The 707 would be a better choice to give you some more warmth and a thick, full sound.

Keep in mind that unless you already have EMGs in your guitar, then you will need to do significant routing in order to install them. The 7-string EMGs use the bass pickup housing.

I have the gloss black one. It's an instrument of death.

I have the red see thru satinish one. And it too is an instrument of death.......tuned to straight A. With stock HZ's. Interesting tone never the less.

Sweet. Yours has the white binding around the body, right? Nice geetar. I'm a Crip, so I can't use a red guitar. :ill:

I like the actual tone coming from the HZ's, but you have to really crank the gain to get them to sound decent. What size strings are you using for the A tuning? I keep my SLSMG in C with 11's, but if I drop the 6th string shit gets real flabby. I'm afraid that if I put larger strings on, I'll lose that great Jackson action - or is it Action Jackson? :loco:

*in Ice-T voice* "Colors, colors, ca ca ca, colors. We don't die we just mulitiply"

I agree on cranking the gain......and also stand away from your amp, because they can get a bit noisy. For the A tuning I use a hybrid set of 12-60. I like my high strings light for the soloing, and the top thick for digging in. The action is still good. I had it set up professionaly and its all good.....untill I try to mess with it.

I have in mind to buy an economical 7th string guitar, a schecter diamond 7 strings that have the emg hz in it.

Just fork out the extra few hundred and grab a Hellraiser. The price difference between Schecter's 'budget' and 'high-end' models is almost negligible, and the component difference is massive.

707s are god... seriously, ever since I got my Hellraiser, I've been in love with these pickups. I wouldn't touch HZs ever again.

if you go back a rake of pages you'll find a post where i put up blind clips of the hz and active EMG's. These were in the same guitar through the exact same signal chain. Fooled most people on here.
I kept the actives in cuz i just shelled out £140 for them :) but they are VERY close, although after playing with them for a while, it's more the response than the sound that I notice as being better...and even then, there's not much in it.
I suppose there will always be that gear snob thing, but IMHO Hz are fine...they're not budget pick ups either...try buying them!
