late 60s, early 70 Soft Machine and it is pretty spectacular music. I must admit that I am impressed to find a band that revolves around the same areas as Pink Floyd but seem to take everything that is right with PF and none of what's wrong...
Well, sometimes PF becomes really sappy, and David "look how long I can keep that bend" Gilmour annoys the hell out of me. Also, almost every album had a song or two that makes you go "what the hell were they thinking? that song doesn't fit there at all", like Seamus on Meddle or Have a Cigar on Wish you Were Here. And I hate everything they did without Roger Waters, with passion.
I have moved on to Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and while the band might have had one of the worse name in the history of rock, that album is also pretty spectacular.
I also like Have A Cigar and they did have some albums with no wasted seconds (Animals especially), but I have to agree on the rest of the Floyd weaknesses...
