Tropical Storm Alex Set to Strike Near the Carolinas, U.S. Says
Aug. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The first named storm of the 2004 hurricane season is poised to strike the U.S. coastline near the Carolinas later today, the U.S. said.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for coastal areas of South and North Carolina, according to an 8 a.m. posting on the Web site of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. The warning means tropical storm conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.
``Radar imagery and reports from an Air Force reserve unit reconnaissance aircraft indicate that Alex has begun to strengthen,'' the report said.
