In a recent post I said... 'I'd say Crusader is a perfect mix of Slough Feg and Logar's Diary'. After several more listens - I must admit there are no similarities between all three bands. Guess my brain's not functioning to well lately  . I apologize if I've misled anyone.

No sweat I don't know any of them anyway

Now I'm REALLY confused - I thought for certain it was you who originally told me about Slough Feg. :loco:

It might have been me, but I'm not sure. In any case, I'm a big fan. I was working at San Francisco State before my previous job in Berkeley, and Mike Scalzi was teaching a course in philosophy...I talked to him from time time on campus....pretty much only about Slough Feg...haha. He's a cool, humble, nice guy.

Guess you are talking about the Belgian Crusader??
Their last album "Skinclad" is very bad I think. There were alot of troubles in the band when recording this album, and production was messed up by a pop-producer. With a new drummer and guitar player they are of to a new start. Their previous CD is very good though, real oldschool stuff. also live this band really kicks ass !! They are kinda world famous among oldschool Metal fans in Belgium :)

Yes, I am referring to them. I REALLY like the 'Skinclad' CD (Just got it last week). Being unfamiliar with the band or their earlier work, I really didn't expect much. After hearing the CD one time the track 'A Pure Heart' stuck in my head and I had to listen to the whole album a few more times. IMO - the album is undoubtedly keyboard heavy but never overbearingly so. Ideally, they could have included more guitar leads - But I'm very fond of it as it is. Also included are 2 of the most unusual metal songs I've ever heard ('Leprechauns' & 'The Confessions [Part I]')- I think both of those songs are pure genius. I'm trying to track down their other two CDs. If I'm not successful, I may need a favor from you come ssk day :heh: . IMO there are many things that make this CD (including the cheesy sirens on the first track) a work of art and one of this year's favorites for me.

Cool you like them. As said, it's a VERY good live band. And the "Leprechauns" song is one of the better live songs ! I went to the CD presentation of "Skyclad" and it really was a great gig. In the middle a break with free food and stuff. Maybe the CD needs a second opinion from me, but generally fans and magazines didn't like it at all either, probably it is different in style from the earlier recordings.

Must be cool to socialize with a performer on that level. Were you a fan of their music prior to that?

Most famous person I've associated with was Skid Roper (part of the ol Mojo Nixon / Beat Farmers cling). He used to sell collectable records at the Pasadena Record Meet twice a month back in the 90's.

Could be you need to give it a chance as a stand alone work. I needed to do that with the new Domine CD - Soon as I stopped comparing it to their previous works - I developed a real appreciation for it.

Yeah, I was a big fan previous. I found out about Slough Feg through the Internet, and when I realized they were from San Francisco I was surprised. Having seen them a few times since, I recognized Mike when he came in to the office I used to work. I just struck up a conversation, and pretty soon we were well past the, "You're so cool part," and just talking about mutual likes etc.

I've run into other Bay Area metal dignitaries, but none at such a nice conversational level. I've run into the guys from Metallica several times, Chuck Billy, some of the guys from Exodus, Dave Meniketti, and a bunch I'm forgetting. Oh, I saw Sammy Hagar awhile back, down by Golden Gate Bridge. I've seen most of the underground-types at shows, and some I've just run into like Mike. Oh, and I saw Jim Schumacher (Brocus Helm) the other day at the annual Gay Pride parade. My wife and I had never gone, and since it is kind of a local big to-do (this is San Francisco afterall), we figured we check it out. He was taking pictures right next to me, so I said hi. He's a nice guy.
