Well, two things I think are helping the sound:
1) Going through the Recto power section
2) I know what mids are, and I use them
A lot of people that use the MP-2 don't know what mids are apparently. My friend has an MP-2 -> Peavey Classic 50/50 -> Mesa 4x12 and it sounds brutal, but has no mids, so as soon as the drums start going off he turns to mush. Then again I think I remember he has a BBE 462 in the loop of the MP-2 and I'll bet one of those knobs are cranked. Anyway, I had always heard the MP-2 was a piece of shit, but never tried one myself. Boy am I glad that I got the guy to trade me both because the MP-1 in stock form is just not metal at all, IMO. This trade reminded me of how much of a huge difference modding your MP-1 makes. The MP-1 is more 80's, extremely warm and rounded in comparison. The MP-2 (stock) reminds me of like...a rodded Marshall or something, just really raw and everything. The MP-1 in stock setup is a really great lead preamp, it will give you those really FAT lead tones, but it just will not do cutting metal rhythms unless it's modded with either the 3TM, 3.666, or one of the other mods to make it more like a modern hi-gain amp.
I may record a snippet of the MP-1 doing the same track, and I will work with it as much as possible in the room to see how close of a metal sound I can get with it. So you guy can see the big difference between the two preamps. I'll process it the same as I did the MP-2 clip, only a hi and low pass.
