i guess i'm going to see Polyphonic Spree tonight at the Paradise?

as far as their records go, I like the premise, but then the music gets tiresome about halfway through.

I'd definately go check them out though in a live setting.

okay!

first off, the show was great! i had a lot of fun (and not just because i got trashed) and the crowd and band were really into the performance.

they had, by my count, 23 people onstage at this show. everyone was wearing coloured gospel-type robes.

they were NOT like cerberus shoal--they WERE kind of like a hippied-out Spiritualized, with chorused, singalong, oft-repeated lines backed with horn and string arrangements and stuff (they would sing one line, like "I LOVE THE SUN...AND IT MAKES ME SMILE" over and over again for like 5 minutes). very energetic, and every single song became a singalong.

the neat part was that after the show was over, they came back on-stage through the crowd, and the lead guy (who has a voice VERY similar to Wayne's from the Flaming Lips, although that's where the similarities between their music styles end) told a story about how they have been asked to play the MTV VMA (even though they don't have a video) and we could all just go home, but they were going to run through the song they're playing and try to get it under the required 2 min 45 sec, and the show is over and they're just going to talk amongst themselves and ignore us. so of course we stayed. they played the song 2-3 times and did the ending several different ways--it was neat.

bill bought a ticket to see them tonight, as well (i have to work). i would recommend seeing this show!

I really like them. I hope they play a show somewhere around here.

On a somewhat related note, I saw Secret Machines twice this past summer, first supporting The Fire Theft and then headlining with The Helio Sequence as support (THS stole the show). The first time I saw them I knew the singer/guitarist looked really familiar, and the second time I finally realized that I was pretty sure I'd seen his picture in the liner notes on Tripping Daisy's Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb. I asked him if it was him when he was working the merch table, and indeed, he was in Tripping Daisy when he was only a teenager.

I was wary to check Tripping Daisy out after my buddies from Dallas at college built them up so much but this summer I finally got around to listening to Jesus Hits Like The Atom Bomb and man it is AWESOME!! I highly recommend you find a way to listen to it.
