I know probably most of you haven't a clue about it...

... but hopefully I'm wrong:D

Some of you already know I became more a 9000J guy (for various reason)...blablabla. But I get some trouble when it come to modern rock mixing on the J. Board is clean and I miss some color in 2bus department. I have really little experience with J/XL, much more with 4K and I know both board doesn't sound/feel the same. I don't try to recreate 4K sound on the J (and mixing on a 4k isn't an option in my case).

Anyway since 9000J and Pro tools are really interchangeable sound wise, it would be great to get some idea about what you guys use for adding color in 2bus when mixing modern rock.
Can be hardware or software;)

Thanks a lot

I was lucky enough to intern at and be able to use the gear at a fairly big studio this summer, and I personally loved the Fatso Jr on the master bus.

They have all the well known heavy hitters such as 1176 and LA2/3A plus a lot of botique styled stuff, but I always came back to the Fatso for the master bus and just bus compression in general. Absolutely love that unit.

Edit: It can also do saturation without compression if that's what you are looking for, but might be a bit overkill if that's all you want it for.

You know what? You are the second one I hear loving the fatso on 2bus. First one say same thing as you but talking about the UBK fatso instead;) Maybe I need both because I really want to try a fatso on drum bus (I always use a 33609 when available for that).

VCC and VTM.

Kush Audio's UBK-1 can RULE as well.... on some of the "tape' presets...

I tried the UBK-1 and Phoenix for that duty but both didn't do the trick in that particular case. UBK-1 was too subtle for saturation only, and put compression side was too heavy for my liking (already had a red3 as 2bus comp).
Will give a try with VCC (but put a console emulation on a real console 2bus chain sound a little like people using waves ssl while being on a real ssl don't you think:D).

I don't want to change the whole sound, just adding more color and warm on 2bus, if that make sense...

If you get a chance to test both the UBK and the Empirical Labs Fatso please update this thread with your opinion/results. I have heard only great things about the UBK Fatso but have only had the chance to try the Empirical Labs.

No problem;)

Anyway, thanks to those who took the time to give an answer, I appreciate;)
