About two weeks ago I was lucky enough to be walked through all 5 of Finnvox's studios.
I got the full monty..all mixing studios, the prestigious mastering room, the 5.1 surround for-cinema room, and the epic live drum room.
I've been taking a trip up to Finland every year since about 2007 to see friends. One of my friend's sister is dating one of the mixing engineers there, Aki Sihvonen.
So of course I had to ask for a good look around the legendary place, hehe.

I'm sure most of you have heard the name Finnvox. If you haven't, just about every metal record that comes from Suomi land has been mastered there at least.

Mother of god, that chair  (in the shot below the piano) Looks amazing, though a bit more cramped in the control rooms than I would have imagined from such a well-known place - can't argue with the gear/results though!

Haha, yea Marcus, the chair in the mastering room is a curious bit. I'd like one!

Beville: Maybe they have to be Genelec fans. It's a born and bred Finnish company after all. Nokia and Genelec, still bringing home the Suomi bacon from worldwide, hehe

Interesting, Aki actually recorded my friends' band, them all being from Savo and all, I think I've also met him once when drunk. It's interesting how small Finland really is.

Finnvox is an interesting place, we had a tour around the studios in Helsinki once with our class, and Finnvox was one of the first places we visited. It has this odd homely atmosphere to it, even though it's just an ugly concrete bunker that should just give you some authoritarian USSR vibes or something. And it was funny how you could just find stuff like 808's lying around randomly.

Finnvox Studio is the very first name I ever got interested in, in terms of production. I remember reading everywhere "album mastered in Finnvox Studio" which made me curious, and then I discovered the Studio Fredman (In Flames Clayman got me there) and then Sneap obviously (Arch Enemy - Anthem of Rebellion). I plan on having my first release mastered there, just for the sake of it since I started geeking on audio production because of them in the very first place, and because I "dreamed" of this several years ago and decided my first master will be made by them.

Actually yeah, I asked Aki about Anssi. He said he was just interning and doesn't work there anymore. Heh, although he did ask me about Joey Sturgis and knew that Anssi is moderator for his forum

Yeah there was some sort of university intern program that allowed Anssi, and presumably a whole litany of other people, to be at Finnvox for a few months plugging in cables, he made out like he was actually employed there (changed his Youtube page/Facebook employment to "Engineer @ Finnvox studios") but the reality was that it was just some education off go that he had the opportunity to participate in. It was quite embarassing actually and when I brought him up on it he deleted a whole topic to save face.

Ouch, haha. Like you mentioned, Aki also told me he was basically plugging in cables and fetching mics. I'm not slanting the dude though, a study program like that is obviously a cool thing to be apart of.

i LOVE studios like this, they are more comfortable and enjoyable. I was lucky enough to have my studio setup like this and take up an entire basement with 2 rooms.
