Billenzimmer wrote a review of The Haunted / Mercenary / Needleye. He dismisses Mercenary for being power metal, and draws the following analogy:
"If the whole of metal was comparable to the world of film making, then thrash would be war films, death world be horror and power metal would be musicals."
I actually like this analogy a lot, and I agree that some power metal would be akin to musicals (Avantasia, for example). But I think a LOT of power metal should instead go in the action/adventure or even sci-fi category.
Since people get their panties in a bunch when others try to categorize metal into subgenres as music, imagine the fun when we try to categorize metal as film!
How do you accept these analogies, and what would be your own? What would progressive metal be? Avante garde art films?
Discuss.
