If You Were Curious About The New FW DVD...

I got it a couple of weeks ago and was not very impressed. It just doesn't sound "live" to me. Sure, most live albums and dvds are doctored to an extent, but this sounds way too produced. You can only hear the crowd when they want you to.

The video and the setlist I didn't have any problems with....except for the Portnoy footage which is shot strictly from the side of the stage.

I got the DVD to came out. Now that I gave it time to sink, I'd say its for Die-hard only FW fans (fortunatly, they're my favorite band, so not a loss for me). A first irks though:

1. Yeah, Nick probably wasn't the right drummer for the job. They probably should have shot a show when Portnoy was playing.

2. As much as I really don't want to accept it, we probably won't see any Arch-era songs live (although I think fans who prefer their newer stuff would still eat up "Guardian"). But c'mon, how about "Silent Cries" or something? Hell, Perfect Symmetry could use more representation too. I mean, at LEAST "Through Different Eyes", which is one of the best songs of the post-No Exit era. Hell, why not dust off "Part Of The Machine" or "Static Acts"?
This is probably more of a personal thing though...

3. The camera work sucks. Especially the often-noted "he rips a solo and we focus on SOMETHING ELSE ALTOGETHER!". Dammit, "Life In Still Water" is my favorite FW songs (if not my favorite song ever, period), and is one of my favorite songs to jam out to on guitar. And dammit, I'd been trying to figure out that solo forever. It comes on, AND THE CAMERA GOES SOME 100 FEET AWAY! As a musician, it would have been cool to be able to, y'know, appreciate Aresti absolutly shredding during the set.

4. Again, a more personal thing. How come some bands downtune their songs? I don't know, thats something that always screwed with the music in my mind. It would have been cool to hear "Life In Still Water", "Nothing Left To Say" or "Monument" in their original sound. But again, thats a personal thing.
However, I will say that the versions of "The Eleventh Hour" and "Still Remains" absolutely slay their studio counterparts.

One last thing. Ray Alder is my favorite vocalist. While I still think he has a better voice these days than a majority of vocalist I have heard, does anyone know if he is still capable of hitting those high notes like he use to?

Great review. I have been listening to FW since "No Exit" and also know the earlier releases as well. At one time they were my favorite band, and though they seem to have lost a little something (aside from Zonder) over the years, they are still a high quality band. I might be interested in the DVD.

Yeah I don't mind no more Arch-era songs, I mean, I love them, but it just doesn't really fit with what FW is today.
On the other hand, if they could play "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" in its entirety again... :loco:
