Illogicist – Dissonant Perspectives
Demo – Self-released – February 2003
By Russell Garwood

Released in February 2003, "Dissonant Perspectives" is the sophomore, extremely professional demo from Italian group Illogicist. Their debut "Polymorphsim Of Death" was well recorded, very technical, heavy death metal, and this release steps every element up a notch. The music is more violent, the time changes are more frequent and weirder, and the instruments are tighter.

The guitars of Luca Minieri and Diego Ambrosi are grinding, sick and twisted, and contain significantly more dual lines than in the group’s debut. The melodies are similar to their previous release, with a technical, jumping feel and precise start-stop riffage that keeps the songs hurtling perversely forward with an almost unstoppable momentum. Remy Curtaz’s drums are tight beyond belief; taking all the start/stop sections in their stride, often they synchronize with the guitars to highlight time changes and odd signatures. The bass, courtesy of Emilio Dattolo, is also highly technical and well performed. Skipping lines underpin the guitars well and help provide an air-tight rhythm section. Vocals courtesy of Luca are more guttural than on previous work, adding to the heavier feel and making the energetic music truly compelling.

After hearing "Polymorphism Of Death" I was surprised the band were without a label, and if they are not signed after "Dissonant Perspectives" I will be amazed. You see, Illogicist do not only outplay the majority of unsigned bands, they are a lot better than many signed acts as well. Their music is technical yet accessible and heavy yet melodic; a balance many groups strive for and fail utterly. All this is bound by good song-writing and technical competency. You have been warned. Keep your eyes open for Illogicist - if their success matches their talent the band has a very bright future!
