now now now.
i agree with hyena and misanthrope: it's not tolerable and something should be done.
the facts, for those who are unfamiliar with the situation:
the #ultimatemetal irc channel, hosted on irc.mahke.net (a server controlled/owned by mark - i'm not sure about that) was registered by a user nicknamed "protocol", a youth from sweden with a tendency to sing along to primus.
when you register a channel on a server you get to have full powers over it and the users who access it, and that means: you can choose who's in/out, you can kick/ban ppl, you can choose who gets operator status and so on and so forth. i guess the reason why protocol registered the channel and mark was happy about it is that protocol surfs the net on a very powerful connection, thus managing to always be online, sunshine or rain. this sounded possibly as a good way to avoid abuse.
little did anyone know - i hope - that protocol would prove to be the very one to abuse the channel and his powers.
as far as misanthrope's banning is concerned, that's the first time i hear about it and i would certainly like to know more, because
only last night protocol mentioned
never having banned anyone, so now i guess we have to add dishonesty to his charges.
the thing concerning hyena is as follows:
one day hyena set the topic of the channel (a line above the room that is plain for everyone to see and that most ppl can change, and did, at will) to "let's bomb the fuck out of iraq". as much as this notion/opinion/idea could be debatable and even unpleasant for some, in my mind one has the right to express his/her opinions as much as everybody else, no matter if they're likeable or not. since
no control had ever been set on topic changes, it sounded perfectly ok to me that everyone would set it to his/her likings, and then someone else could come and change it again and so on.
protocol, on the other hand, decided first to set the topic to a boring reprimand on the need to be civil and avoid topics he didn't like, then - after some frantic topic changes based largely on "bubu", and you know how dangerous is that - to
lock the topic in a way he liked it, stating afterwards that only three-four ppl of his choosing would ever be able to change it again in the future.
last night he publicly stated that:
- he was being kind and benign to us.
- he could only accept topics he deemed "civil".
- he tolerated discussion on the matter but he could have done much worse and resort to violence.
- he dared ppl to file complaints to mark, waving about some sort of immunity.
all of this is logged for everyone who wants to read.
my take on the matter is that no community online should be ruled by a boy bossing around the users. it's all very well to appoint someone to prevent abuses, such as the channel being flooded by bots or spammers. quite another is putting in charge a child keen on banning and jealous of his idea of what "good behaviour" and "civilized ppl" are supposed to be.
i will certainly report to mark, but first i'd like to hear some opinions as to what can be done about it. i stress the fact this individual is indeed getting out of control.
@hyena: hold on a while more.
@misanthrope: hmm... although your new sig is not in quicktime, i'm afraid someone might find it a bit overboard when it comes to dload times...
rahvin.
