In defence of No Prayer

I didn't think much of FOTD when I first heard it, but these days I play it a lot (more often than NPFTD anyway). I tend to enjoy the songs on that album that no-one else likes, eg From Here To Eternity, Wasting Love, The Fugitive and of course Weekend Warrior. This one sounds just like a song by The Who that I can't quite place. Maybe that's why I like it so much.

Don't get me wrong, Tinman. It was trying something new, and I'm all for that, but it failed dismally. There's very few Maiden songs that I can't stand, but that's one of them.

I totally agree with that comment....fear is the key along with angel and the gambler get my vote for worse maiden songs ever.

'Fear Is The Key' is the only song from 'Fear Of The Dark' I cannot stand. It too get's my vote for one of Maidens worst.

Other than that, I really like Fear Of The Dark. Personally it is one of my favourite Maiden albums.

No Prayer reminds me too much of Tattooed Millionaire. A 'no-balls dirty-rock' sound may work for ACDC, but it just isn't Maiden.

X Factor is great. Virtual 11 is bad.

This is my last post for a while

Random notes:

* I prefer NPFTD to FOTD.
* I love "Hooks in You".
* I haven't listened to "Mother Russia" in about 10 years - probably my all time least-favourite Maiden song.
* The main problem with NPFTD is the production. The songs are fine, though.
* I really like "Fear is the Key". In fact, I like most of the songs on FOTD.
* Far too many songs on FOTD, though. Could have done without "The Apparition" for starters, as well as "Childhood's End" and "The Fugitive".
* Brucey's voice leaves a lot to be desired on both albums, but especially FOTD.

That is all (for now).

NPFTD is, IMHO, a much better album than FOTD. 'Fear' has no sense of order, and the songs differ so much from what was written before them.

When you listen to Prayer, at least it feels as though the album flows along. With Fear, it begins really well with Quick, Eternity and Strangers, but then loses the plot.

Up until FOTD was released, I knew every Maiden album's tracklist, in order. If someone walked up to me in the street and asked me who wrote "The Apparition", I would not have known (just looking at the album now....).

Ah finally someone else making sense haha... NPFTD may not be in the calibre of Brave New World or Powerslave but it is a pretty consistent album - obviously some of you would say consistently ordinary! Fear of the Dark on the other hand has a few good songs - Be Quick or be Dead, Afraid to Shoot Strangers and the title track but the rest is very, very patchy. The Apparition is woeful, one of their worst ever and Fear is the Key is roughly on a par with Weekend Warrior! The rest of the tracks plod along and they sound like a band running out of puff - which is understandable considering the albums and tours in the preceding seven or eight years.
NPFTD has some great songs - Running Silent Running Deep is great, so is Mother Russia and Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter is simple but effective. I personally think the lyrics are quite good! The title track is one of Maiden's best in terms of Bruce's vocals and lyrics through the verses. In fact I think I will listen to this album tonight!!! Public Enema Number One and Fates Warning are not bad tracks and even Hooks in You is catchy if not spectacular. The Assassin is probably the weakest track.
In conclusion NPFTD is highly underrated while Fear of the Dark is patchy at best!
Brave New World was a great album for a few reasons. Bruce and Adrian returning to the band is obviously the main reason as Bruce helped shape the Maiden sound we all know and love and Adrian's song writing contributions were equally important. I am probably one of the biggest Steve Harris fans you'll ever meet but I think it was partly the lack of Adrian Smith's input that contributed to NPFTD and FOTD being rather lacklustre affairs in comparison to previous efforts. No offence to Janick Gers, Dave Murray or Nicko McBrain, but the combination of Harris- Dickinson-Smith is what made Iron Maiden really take off in the early 80s through to Seventh Son.
I was rapt to hear Bruce was back in the band. When I heard that Adrian was coming back too I became quite excited at the prospect of another classic Maiden album and they certainly delivered in my opinion. Can't wait for the next one!

I'll still be around, and watching over everyone - but I'll keep quiet for a bit.
I've just got a few things that need to be sorted before I can move on.

First post I've placed in the Iron Maiden forum ...

...I've been a Maiden fan for as long as I can remember,
and I'm actually one of the few who really like
'No Prayer for the Dying', with the exception of
"Bring Your Daughter..." ...

Lot of classic Maiden on this one, like "Public Enema Number One", "Run Silent Run Deep" and "Mother Russia".
