Incapacity – Chaos Complete
Cold Records – COLD002 – September 2003
By Russell Garwood

Incapacity are a “supergroup” of sorts; with Anders Edlund of Solar Dawn on bass, vocalist Andreas Axellsson (ex-Edge Of Sanity, ex-Marduk, Infestdead), guitarists Christian Älvestam (Solar Dawn, Unmoored) and Robert Ivarsson (ex-Ashes, ex-Pan-Thy-Monium, ex-Ophthalamia), and drummer Henrik Schönström (Solar Dawn, Unmoored, Traumatized) its members are certainly experienced. The compelling, if unoriginal, music is an amalgamation of death and thrash, with nods to both old school and more contemporary forms of both genres. Andreas’ vocals show relatively little variation, but his more classic death growl is a welcome front to the unforgiving music, helping inject energy into the harsh sound. The guitars are excellent, a perfect balance between technicality (numerous time changes help keep the songs varied) and extremity, while containing a strong dose of melody, helping to create memorable hooks. Henrik’s drumming is of a high standard, negotiating and enhancing the dynamic and time changes, while Anders’ bass is solid.

The production, courtesy of Jonas Kjellgren (Carnal Forge, Centinex), is crystal clear, helping craft an accessible release despite its ferocity. This all makes for a good album – competent musicians, well-written songs and catchy yet heavy music compensates for a lack of originality. It is likely fans of modern thrash and older death will greatly appreciate “Chaos Complete”, so if you like fast and aggressive yet melodic music, Incapacity are well worth trying out.
