This writer is truly not sure who or what A Symphony of Suffering is meant to impress. Florida death metal was perfected sixteen years ago with Morbid Angel’s Blessed are the Sick. Others might hold the opinion that this style reached its peak two decades ago with Scream Bloody Gore. Yet hear we have Infernaeon, a Florida-based death metal band with some surprisingly symphonic elements.

Many death metal aficionados will be familiar with a few of the names on this recording. Sam Molina and Brian Werner both served time in Monstrosity, one of the front-runners, albeit lesser known, within the Florida death metal scene. Also, Ben Falgoust of Goatwhore and Soilent Green fame provides vocals on one of the tracks. So, with all of this underground talent present, A Symphony of Suffering should be something truly unique and special. Well, Faithful Reader, it is not.

It is obvious these guys can play their respective instruments. In fact, the guitar solos are one of two things that stayed with this writer long after the thirty-minute album had expired. The other element in Infernaeon’s sound that made an impact was the effective usage of keyboards. Used sparingly and in optimum moments within the compositions, they added a malevolent layer that, without them, would have left the songs sounding empty and naked. It did surprise this writer how well and natural-sounding the synths fit.

This one is simple, Faithful Reader. Have you had enough of this sound, or do you bleed death metal from the swamplands? If you do, you cannot go wrong with Infernaeon’s brand of symphonic Floridian death metal.

Effort and talent accounts for a lot in this writer’s eyes, but music without a message is simply controlled noise.
