In the spirit of ethnocentric threads: I am going on a business trip to Bergen in a little less than one month and I was wondering whether any of the viking types dwelling on this board can give me local information (clubs, bands, museums, nature spots etc)

Thank you!

Watch out for Trolls and Jotun... and blackmetallers looking for someone to slay them on norwegian soil.

Nah if I'm being serious, all I know is, you better wrap up warm and there's this bar that was the heart of the blackmetal scene in the early 90s... but it's become too unkvlt to hang there now. Although it's apparently Ihsahn's local :p... So it's got to be fairly kvlt. Anyway, the name of this bar eludes me, as does it's location. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

You're not thinking about 'Elm street' (IIRC)? That one is in Oslo (also IIRC). Not that I've been there...

hyena: If you go out in teh woods (snö og granskog!!!1) you'll probably meet Fenriz from Darkthrone. If you approach him slowly (he's supposedly sort of shy :p ), maybe you can get his autograph for me? :D

Hahah well I was there and Bergen is great :kickass: :headbang: !

A few suggestions:

- Take a raincoat. In Bergen they count how many days straight has been raining, when I got there (January 10), they were on to 372. o_O .

- Impermiable suitcase. You don't want your metal stuff to get wet like mine did do you?

- Bars: I went to two bars, don't remember the name (check www.metaltravelguid.com), one was very Power (lots of Manowar for ye Hyena :p ), and one was more Blackish. Both of them were pretty close by :) .

- There's a nice hostel but you have to be here before 15 or something (I barely made it :erk: :p)

Anything you'd like to know just ask me! :headbang:

As for the rain, it has been raining for i don't know how many days on end here as well, so it won't be a sea change (heh).

Thanks for the input so far and keep it coming!

Hahaha, i hadn't seen the Kenya one.

Yes, i'm teh internets person. No idea why you thought i'm non-geeky though. I'm probably not anyway. Or am i?

It's probably the cloak of picturesque deceit that is the whole mermaid concept, it is to blame for everything!

ive been to Elm Street, about 4 years ago, was only 16 so i couldnt get grog hah.

The Viking ship Museum in Oslo is pretty killer, i'd try check that out. As for Bergen, well, i only went there fora few days. Trondheim has an awsome metal store.

And yeah no one goes to Elm street anymore, at least it didnt turn into a Cafe like Helvete hah.

Odin Loves This Article

The Allfather, the Hanged God, the Lord of Men, is the supreme judge of heroic things.
He has personally reviewed this article and determined that it is up to Valhalla's quality
standards. The author is permitted to enter the heroic realm of Asgard upon death.
In the meantime, the author will be given a cask of Odin's favorite mead. And maybe
a little bit of heavenly gold or something.

"There are also some black metal people here, but whether they should actually
be counted as Norwegian citizens is often discussed, as many of these black metal
people claim they live in the "underground"."

info on Norway

but yeh, i forgot to mention, if all goes to plan at the end of the year ill be moving to Norway for 12months, then over to Sweden for 12months, then maybe to Finland or Iceland for 12 months, see which ones the best and move permenantly to one. I loved it in Norway, not only for the metal, but the scenary, atmosphere, it was unreal.

*A very typical spot in Bergen for concerts is Hulen, close to Nygärdsparken. It pretty much depends on how lucky you are when you get there, since Hulen hosts many types of concerts.

*In the Bryggen area you'll find some nice little museums. There's a viking museum there, and the Hanseatic museum too, among others. Well... there are many more museums in Bergen; it basically depends on what you like to see.

*There are a lot of nice mountains surrounding Bergen, and hiking there is very typical. Flöyen is (theoretically) the one all tourists prefer, since there's a cable-car there and they can get to the top without effort. Norwegians prefer the other ones :Smug:. I'd recommend you to get a trip in the surrounding fjords too, and also to the isles.

*Metalers are not easy to spot in Bergen. Get good waterproof clothes and have a look; you might be lucky.

Cheers :kickass:
