What inspires you to write a song? or a riff or anything? I haven't written anything much since last summer year, I blame videogames and just a sudden lack of interest in guitar (but videogames mainly). I have worked on some stuff since then, mainly recorded an old song and helped my friend write a song but last year at this time guitar was pretty much my life. I am missing that devotion to guitar that sense of wonder and awe at writing something I love to play or even learning a new song by a favorite band or artist. Basically I want to get back to being a guitar addict; help me out guys!

I basically listen to some piano music written by Franz Liszt.
but i also search for different instrumental guitarists. Andy Timmons is cool....John Petrucci's newest album is also great.
U can also try dial in a different sound on ur amp.

All I have to do is think of what is important to me. It's the unknown and mystical things in life that get to me and hold my interest. The deeper emotions, the stranger sciences; odd things like lucid dreaming, astronomy, quantum physics, etc. Beauty in itself can be the greatest inspiration. All these things constantly keep me going, and the music is a natural result.

TV and video games are a great way to waste time (though games can be quite fun). Stay away from the TV though, it is just evil.

you need to be inspired!
sometimes a cool piece of artwork can kick you into gear. Or exploring new bands, different genres of music. I really enjoy old school funk (james brown). Fusion is another cool thing to check out 'cause its a mix of everything. I'm pretty much a progmetal guy but the whole jazz fusion thing really intrigues me due to the diversity. I do a lot of recreational reading and a lot of the visualization coming from that can spark some creativity as well. Don't force it, your muse will rear its head again.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am hoping once my sudden mass of second term work slows down in March I'll be able to complete a new song. Also Yann Tiersen has been really inspiring as of late, maybe something will come of my obsession of his works.

In the meantime, if you feel like it, check out some of the stuff I have done here and give me some critique (I wrote Rendered to Dust, and cowrote The Forlorn Dawn with my friend, he wrote Endlessly Aflame): www.myspace.com/evokingdesolation

It's just two guitars for the time being, not to mention the recording quality isn't too good, but I figure if anyone has some good criticism it would be fellow musicians.

I recently got inspired to play guitar again. I've been playing for 13 years but I stopped for a year and a half. I don't really know why I stopped. I just didn't really care about guitar anymore, which was strange because before that guitar was my life. Maybe you should go back and listen to some of the stuff that first inspired you to play and write music in the first place. That sometimes helps. You have to be inspired though. Forcing yourself to write music always seems to turn out badly.

try to think of or listen to the songs which make you feel like you live in that particular universe that the song itself tells you...and try to do something that u would enjoy listening..these are the two most important things when it comes to writing...and also if u really want to have something unique u must have shitloads of influences from every genre

What seems to work pretty well for my guitarist is when I'll just start playing a drum beat and we'll jam on it for a while to see if anything comes out of it. This might not help as much if it's just blastbeats, but it still could. Collaborating really helps with song arrangements as well. Listening to your favorite artists can be pretty risky. You'll more likely than not rip them off.

normally when i get inspired to write death metal is when i am really pissed off,

for black metal it just depends on if i feel like it

its really on my mood

but i also get inspiration from listening to a band that i love

but of course my songs absolutely suck lol
