i thought the quote "I just booked tickets to go see Slayer and my favourite bands are Iron Maiden and Nine Inch Nails," he said. "All my peers are heavy metal fans and we would have been more surprised if you had said we liked listening to Britney Spears but not heavy metal." by Oliver Searle, 30, a professional composer who teaches at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow
was rather entertaining...

just thought i'd share

Hmmmmmm Very interesting, as someone who grew up not only listening to classical music but also playing it(Piano for 16 years) that article hit a nerve. Never really thought about the parallel between the two genres, but the more you think about it. I know that the conductor of the El Paso Symphony Sarah Ionnes is a huge fan of Nightwish, and Within Temptation. In fact at one of their concerts low and behold, their intro was a segement from NIGHTWISH's "Planet Hell".

Something off the Virgin Black interview that was very interesting:

Vocalist: "Following the recording and release of Sombre Romantic I caught wind of an elite opera teacher in our city. Agim Hushi who had the same teacher as Pavarotti. I contacted him with a view to possibly gain something and embellish Virgin Black’s vocals. An audition was arranged and I attended with an expectation that I may well make a complete fool of myself, but it turned out quite the opposite. He loved my voice and accepted me immediately upon one condition, to give up my band and concentrate on training with him. He hadn’t heard of Virgin Black, and found anything along the lines of Rock/Pop detestable. My response was a strong and assertive “no”. As one could imagine, this intrigued him. I desperately didn’t want him to hear the music – being wary of his aversion to anything outside the classical genre…and after many cries of “you wont understand it”, I produced the Sombre Romantic CD. He loved it! He was completely over the top in his response, comparing us to Mozart and suggesting that we were exactly what the classical music scene needed; that response continues to amaze me and needless to say, I was accepted, band and all. Now I train with him with a view to eventually perform traditional operas as well as Virgin Black."

Virgin Black will be touring the U.S. very soon, btw.

EL PASO HAS A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA?!?!?!?!:lol::lol::lol:

I've always thought about the parallels, even moreso since the day that Prog seriously got their peanut butter in the heavy metal chocolate in the 80s.

Yes, ELP etc are a perfect examples of of the prog/classical symbiosis. When Prog Rock went progmetal that sealed the deal. Therion and the multitude of symphonic metal bands like Epica, Sym X, Nightwish....and Black Metal has a huge of classical infuence. Even if you remove the classical intrumentation and you have bands like Fates Warning etc...

Plus both musical styles take some SERIOUS SKILL... and that is appreciated by both sets...

There was a hard core classical music guy I worked with (he was a French horn player, so off the top, you know he was weird....lol) who absolutely LOVED Symphony X, not just Romeo's orchestrations, but the feel of the whole band. I'm sure he picked up a couple of discs... I was SHOCKED!

I read the article yesterday, and I agree that what people listen to does reflect on who somebody is, especially when their life is completely consumed by music like mine. Music is ALL that defines me and is my life, and that is why my mind has been so open lately to all music no matter what genre, as long as it is written well and isn't music that was just pushed out to make money, music made from the mind and spirit with plenty of heart(and that heart, mind, and spirit can be angry as a motherfucker too).

Yeah, it's called Therion...

here's a quote from Christofer himself regarding the band's music over the last 10 years or so...

For the records from Vovin and onwards, the inspiration comes from both classic and opera composers like Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, heavy metal acts from the 80’s like Accept and Iron Maiden, 70’s hard rock bands like Uriah Heep... and tons of progressive 70’s bands that nobody knows anymore these days.

Great article! I'm a long time fan of both styles of music...and really love bands like TSO and Van Helsing's Curse that combine the best of both worlds.

I think that another similarity is the fact that the artists are more concerned with creating something powerful and meaningful, rather than trying to cram a song into a 3:59 format that will get played on the radio.

I'm a volunteer with the Phoenix Symphony's "Symphony for the Schools" program, where I do classroom presentations three times a year. I do one section of the presentation where I play snippets of different styles of music, and I always sneak in a hard rock / heavy metal track. I love it when some of the kids start to headbang.
